TEST #1 ANN SLONE CHALK PAINT

SO I GAVE IN AND ORDERED SOME
ANN SLONE CHALK PAINT SAMPLES
AND THE CLEAR WAX, AND DARK WAX.
I WANT TO TRY TO MAKE MY OWN AND
I FIGURED I HAD TO SEE HOW THE REAL THING
WORKS FIRST! THE THING THAT
I LIKED THE MOST ABOUT THIS PAINT IS THAT
THEY SAY YOU DON'T SAND OR PRIME. WHO
WOULDN'T LOVE THAT!

THIS IS A PREVIEW OF THE PROJECT I'M
DOING WITH IT.

SO I WIPED IT DOWN AND GOT OUT MY PAINT
BRUSH AND MY SAMPLE OF OLD WHITE.
2 COATS AND THE DARK WOOD STILL WASNT
COVERED. I PAINTED THE SIDES AND THE TOP WITH ABUSSON BLUE. MY SAMPLE POT OF OLD
WHITE ALMOST GONE. I DECIDED TO DO
A THIRD COAT OF PARIS GREY AND I COVERED
THE WHOLE PIECE TOOK 2 COATS OF THE
PARIS GREY.

SO FAR IM NOT A BELIEVER
AND I'M NOT YET READY TO
DRINK THE KOOL-AID.

IM LETTING IT DRY OVERNIGHT AND
PLAN ON WAXING IT AND DISTRESSING
IT AND I WILL POST THE PICTURES
WHEN I AM TOTALLY DONE.

THE PAINT WAS VERY CREAMY AND THE
PAINT STROKES DO DISAPPEAR AFTER
THE SECOND COAT. BUT I THOUGHT
THE COVERAGE WOULD BE BETTER.
I THOUGHT I COULD JUSTIFY THE COST
IF I COULD GET IT TO GO FURTHER THAN
LATEX BUT I THINK LATEX WOULD
HAVE COVERED THE SAME. MAYBE
I SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE CUBBIES
ON MY FIRST TEST AS THEY DO TAKE
UP ALOT OF PAINT JUST LIKE SPINDLES
I HATE SPINDLES !

I DIDN'T HAVE TO SAND OR PRIME AND I'M
HOPING THAT THE PAINT ADHERES AS
GOOD AS I HAVE READ IT DOES.
A FEW SPOTS HAVE ME WORRIED.

I DON'T WANT TO MAKE ANY
JUDGEMENTS ON IT UNTIL
I HAVE FINISHED A PIECE AND I DO
HAVE A FEW MORE SAMPLES TO TRY ON
OTHER PIECES SO WE WILL SEE!

IM HOPING FOR THE BEST!

  1. Good Luck Lauren! I am a firm Chalk Paint believer. I was scared of the price though. However, the shop that I have a booth at carries the ASCP products so it was easier for me to acquire it. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't work as well the first time. I have had a few colors I needed to toy with. Send me an e-mail if you have questions. You will LOVE the way it sands and distresses. Here is my tip. Paint, Sand then Wax. A bit messier but better result. Good Luck!

  2. Oh no - sorry it isn't working out so awesome. I have only used a few samples as well so far but I was really happy with how they worked. I have read that old white is thinner and does not cover quite as well as the brighter colors which have more pigment. Hope the piece turns out well.

  3. I haven't tried it yet, either. To me, I can't justify the price right now, it's not resourceful enough for me when I know htere are other products out there that work fine. Let us know how it turns out. You always do duch a nice job with your pieces! andrea@townandprairie

  5. :( Oh no! I can't wait to hear what your final thoughts are. I have wanted to purchase ASCP but the price is a lil scary to me. I did purchase some calcium carbonate from Amazon.com and made "my own" chalk paint. Whether or not it's like ASCP, I don't know...I don't have any way to compare. I'm curious about Milk Paint too...have you ever tried it? Thanks for posting!

  6. Can't wait to see your final thoughts. My first ASCP (Old White) was a tall piece with 14 cubbies and it did take more than one coat. I painted outdoors on a very warm day and the paint dried really fast. I've also used Graphite on a table. I do like the paint (love the colors) and the clear wax. The dark wax gave me some trouble on the large piece.
    Good luck!

  7. My budget won't curently alow me to splurge on ASCP, especially when I usually work with $1.25 quarts of oops paint. I don't mind the priming...it adds another layer when I distress that I like. Do please post when your project is done with your final opinion.

  8. I too didn't have real good luck with my old white ASCP. I have found you can mix it with Latex white paint up to 50/50 and it will go twice as far cover just as well, and the sanding is the same. Most other colors cover much better than the old white. Good luck.

  9. I, too, am dubious, but feel like saying that puts me in the minority. I splurged on Paris Grey and it did not cover in two coats. I've been afraid to try it since then lest I be disappointed again! Guess I'll give it another go sometime soon. Keep us posted.

  10. I just found your website--good luck with the ASCP! It's all I use now and I've written several tutorials about it, just because it can be kinda tricky. I'd love for you to check them out!

If it just doesn't work for you, it's no big deal. All of your furniture is beautiful anyway!

    P.S.--I'm your newest follower!

  12. I'll be back to see the final result. I have a blogland friend who sells ASCP, and I still haven't tried it. However, like you, I feel like I should try it. I get asked about it all the time, and I can't give an opinion. I've seen it on furniture up close and I like the look, but I've never used it. I don't know if I'm being stubborn, or just content with what I use.

  13. Hi Lauren!
I used your suggestion of adding the warm water to the calcium carbonate and posted about the results @ http://cameobliss.blogspot.com/2011/11/make-your-own-chalk-paint-part-deaux.html
Hope you don't mind me mentioning you!I eagerly await your opinion on the ASCP!!
