ANNIE SLONE CHALK PAINT
A WEEK AGO I POSTED ABOUT TRYING
OUT THE ANNIE SLONE CHALK PAINT
AND I HAVE FINISHED THE PROJECT AND
WOULD LIKE TO SHARE MY THOUGHTS...
I DIDN'T WANT TO DO A HUGE PROJECT
AS I HAD NEVER USED THE PAINT
AND WANTED TO GET A FEEL FOR IT.
I DECIDED TO DO A CUBBY HOLDER WHICH
I WANTED TO PUT MY RECENTLY
AQUIRED CLOCK COLLECTION IN. SO
THIS IS WHAT I STARTED WITH
I DIDN'T WANT TO SAND OR PRIME
AS THE PAINT SAYS YOU DON'T HAVE
TO DO ANY PREP WORK.I JUST WIPED IT
DOWN WITH A DAMP CLOTH.
I STARTED WITH A COAT OF OLD WHITE
I LIKE THE WAY THE PAINT WENT ON IT
WAS VERY SMOOTH. BUT I DEFINATLEY
NEEDED A SECOND COAT. I USED THE AUBUSSON BLUE ON THE TOP AND THE SIDES AS I WANTED TO DISTRESS THRU TO SHOW IT. I WAS
SURPRISED THAT IS NEEDED A SECOND COAT OF OLD WHITE BECAUSE I READ THE PAINT WAS
ALOT THICKER AND COVERED BETTER.
THE OLD WHITE STILL DID NOT COVER AFTER
2 COATS AND I NEEDED TO USE A THIRD COAT.
I HAD ONLY BOUGHT THE SAMPLE SIZE OF
THE PAINTS TO TRY. I DIDNT WANT TO USE
UP ALL MY OLD WHITE SO I DID THE THIRD
COAT IN PARIS GREY AND COVERED THE
WHOLE THING. THE PAINT DID STICK AND DID
NOT NEED A PRIMER. THAT, I FEEL IS
THE BEST PART OF THE PAINT. THE BEST
PART FOR ME ANYWAYS.
I WAS DONE WITH THE PAINTING AND THE
NEXT DAY I WANTED TO DISTRESS IT.
I DECIDED TO DO THE DISTRESSING BEFORE
THE WAX. I DID LOVE THE WAY THAT THE
CHALK PAINT DISTRESSED. THAT YOU ARE
ABLE TO EASILY SAND DOWN TO THE OTHER
COLOR PAINT YOU USED AND WANTED TO SHOW
THROUGH. IN MY CASE THE AUBUSSON BLUE.
AFTERWARDS I APPLIED THE CLEAR WAX
AND THEN THE DARK WAX. I DID LIKE THE
WAX AND I ALSO LIKED THE DARK WAX.
I MIXED THE DARK WAX WITH THE CLEAR
WAX FOR THE SECOND COAT AND CONCENTRATED
ON THE PARTS WHICH I HEAVLY SANDED.
I REALLY LIKE THE LOOK OF THE PAINT
IT GIVES THE PIECE AN OLDER MORE DISTRESSED
LOOK THAN LATEX. DO I LIKE THE PRICE OF
THE PAINT NO. I DON'T THINK THAT IT WENT
AS FAR AS IT SHOULD BUT I DO HAVE SOME
MORE TESTERS IN DIFFERENT COLORS WHICH
I AM GOING TO TRY ON OTHER PIECES SO I
WILL SEE IF MY OPINION CHANGES ON THAT.
AND THEN I AM GOING TO TRY TO WHIP UP
MY OWN DIY VERSION OF THE PAINT AND GIVE
THAT A TRY. DO A COMPARISON OF THE TWO.
SO HERE IS MY AFTER...
LOVE THE WAY THE BLUE CAME THROUGH
WITH THE DISTRESSING!
TIME TO RUN. HOPE YOU LIKE IT!
STAY TUNED FOR MORE TRIALS.
I love how your little cubby cabinet looks. I collect old clocks too and now I know how to display them. Thanks for the wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteI have tried ASCP and I give it a B+ but the price is way too high.
I have also tried making my own and it does really well.

Wow! That is a gorgeous piece. I love the distressed look you achieved! So cool. I'd love something like that in my home. Looks s-a-w-e-e-e-e-t with the clocks too.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so charming, Amanda! And it's the perfect home for your great clock collection! I'm interested to see what you think about the homemade stuff vs. the real thing.

I also hoard, I mean collect alarm clocks and love this idea for displaying them! Great before and after.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear your "take" on the paint--I still haven't made the leap to even trying it. I do love your cubby though, and your collection of clocks is terrific!
ReplyDeleteI love it - and your collection. Beautiful job! :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I love your clock collection too. What a neat cubby for them! I like the distresses look so two coats of Old white it good for me. I actually put Paris Grey on first as a base coat and then I only need to use one coat of the Old white. The part I don't like is the buffing:)
ReplyDeleteIt was great to hear what you think about the pricey paint. I love the look, but the price- obviously not so much. I've seen at least 3, may 4, DIY versions. Which were you planning on? Looking forward to hearing your comparison.
ReplyDeleteOh, and the piece looks really great. I''m pretty sure I would've missed the potential in that one! Great job!
Becca
Thanks for the update. I love how it turned out, too! Keep us posted.

Your cubby turned out great and I love the clock collection! I'm not totally sold on the chalk paint either. And the price is just outrageous! I jusy did a post on homemade chalk paint and I was pretty pleased. It adhered well and I achieved a very similar look. I used leftover paint mixed with paster of paris, so it was thrifty too!
ReplyDeleteLauren, your clock collection is so retro cool and funky! I love it! You did a good job on the cubby display case, too. But I hear ya on the cost. I might try some of that homemade stuff too and give it a whirl. andrea@townandprairie
ReplyDeleteI agree about the paint. I bought it several months back and my two biggest complaints about it was poor coverage and the mess of the dust during the sanding process.
ReplyDeleteI don't like when something becomes 'the rage' and everyone thinks that they have to buy something to be part of it. I felt that was the case with this paint. the cost is really ridiculous. I am still not out of the paint I bought. I actually go out of my way not to talk about it on my blog when I use it. ASCP doesn't need anymore free advertising!!! lol thanks for your honesty. :)
Visiting by way of Bev's party at Flamingo Toes.
ReplyDeleteYour collection certainly caught my eye -- marvelous.
Love the transformation of the cubby shelving, and really appreciate the way you honestly shared your experiences with the chalk paint.

I use ASCP a LOT. here are a couple of things I've noticed. Anything with a 'reddish' stain takes 3 coats to cover. You can let the paint thicken by leaving the lid off and then it will have much better coverage. It can then be thinned back out with water if you need to.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I HATE sanding furniture before I start painting so the paint pays for itself. There are other primers out there that don't require sanding, but at almost $20 per quart I think that's ridiculous too. Not to mention the smell that latex has. I like to know I can paint inside without getting a headache.
The dust issue from sanding can be controlled by using a damp rag or damp green scrubby thing (like for pots and pans) to distress. The damp rag makes almost no dust, but there are drips, so you have to watch for that. I find that I can easily distress furniture inside using the damp rag method.
I absolutely love how the distressing turned out. It is sos so gorgeous I'd love you to link this to my party at http://raegunwear.blogspot.com/2011/11/what-i-wore-wednesdays-1.html
