BULLDOZER GEAR MAILBOX!

THIS PICTURE OF MY
MAILBOX
WAS ACTUALLY TAKEN ABOUT
5 YEARS AGO THERE SINCE HAS
BEEN MORE WEAR AND RUST
BUT FOR SOME REASON I DIDN'T
TAKE A PICTURE RIGHT BEFORE I
STARTED... SO IT LOOKS A LITTLE
BETTER IN THIS PIC THAN IT
REALLY WAS. IT HAS SINCE BEEN
HIT BY THE LAWNMOWER AND TORE
OUT OF THE GROUND.BIRDS ALSO
LOVED USING IT AS A TARGET!

BEFORE...

SO IT WAS A PLAIN JANE MAILBOX
WITH NO FLAIR. I WANTED TO
SPUCE IT UP A BIT AND
GET RID OF THE RUST.

AFTER I TOOK IT APART AND
STARTED PAINTING IT I REMEMBERED
TO TAKE THIS PIC.

THE PAINT I DECIDED TO USE
FOR THE MAILBOX WAS A METALLIC
COPPER PAINT THAT I GOT AT LOWES!
LET ME TELL YOU I LOVED THIS
PAINT. IT MADE MY MAILBOX
LOOK LIKE IT WAS AN ACTUAL
COPPER MAILBOX. I HAD SAW ONE AT
MARSHALL'S THAT I WAS GOING TO BUY FOR ABOUT $40 DOLLARS BUT WHEN I
WENT BACK TO GET IT, IT WAS GONE.
SO THIS IS HOW I WENT ABOUT GETTING THE SAME LOOK FOR LESS.

MY NEXT FEATURE WAS AN OLD
BULLDOZER GEAR WHICH HAD JUST
THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF PATINA, AND
RUST TO GIVE THE MAILBOX THE LOOK I WANTED. ONLY PROBLEM IT WEIGHS ABOUT 6OO POUNDS. I GOT THE OLD GEAR FROM A STONE QUARRY THAT HAD DISGARDED IT. IM NOT THE ONE
THAT MOVED IT BELIEVE ME.
SO THE MAILBOX HAD TO BE DUG OUT
AND THE GEAR PUT DOWN THEN
THE MAILBOX WOULD BE LOWERED
INTO THE HOLE AND FILLED.

IT'S ALOT BIGGER THAN IT
LOOKS IN THE PICTURE.

I ALSO RE-STAINED THE
POST A DARKER COLOR AND SPRAYED
THE ADDRESS NUMBERS IN THE
COPPER FINISH AS WELL.

NEXT WAS TO ADD THE MAILBOX
BACK TO THE TOP OF THE POST
AND IT SURE TURNED OUT PRETTY....

THE NUMBERS ARE FROM HOBBY LOBBY
AND I PAINTED THE FLAG WITH SOME
GOOD OLE ORB SPRAY PAINT.

I WANTED TO DRESS UP THE
MAILBOX A LITTLE SO I DECIDED
TO PLANT SOME MUMS AROUND THE
BOTTOM AND SOME DECORATIVE
ROCKS...EACH SEASON I PLAN ON
DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT INSIDE
THE OLD GEAR.

AFTER...

I THINK IT'S A PRETTY ORIGINAL
MAILBOX. NOT A
SINGLE ONE LIKE IT.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ?

AFTER DOING MY MAILBOX I
STARTED NOTICING EVERY MAILBOX
I WOULD PASS BY IN MY
NEIGHBORHOOD...

A FEW GOOD ONES BUT ALOT
OF VERY NEGLECTED ONES
HERES A FEW... I FELT LIKE A
MAILBOX STALKER WHEN I TOOK
THESE PICTURES.

I WILL CLASSIFY THESE AS THE
FASHION POLICE WOULD, IN THIS
CASE THE MAILBOX POLICE, AS
DO'S AND DONT'S THESE
ARE THE DONT'S I HOPE
MY NEIGHBORS DON'T SEE THIS
POST BUT IT WAS FUN TO DO!

AND THE BEST DO'S THAT I SAW..

THIS ONE I THOUGHT WAS CUTE BUT
NEEDS A LITTLE PAINT AND SOME
WORK AROUND THE BOTTOM.

AND I LOVE THE CORN STALKS
AROUND THIS ONE.
THERE WERE ALOT MORE
DONT'S THAN DO'S !

WHAT CATEGORY DO YOU FALL IN?
I HAD ALOT OF FUN DOING THIS
POST I HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT.
AND I HOPE YOU LIKED MY
BULLDOZER GEAR MAILBOX!

  1. I love your mailbox makeover! I have an old gear too and I want to "plant" one of those old fashion pump faucet things for the garden out of it ;) This will be so fun for you to plant seasonally, great idea ;) My mailbox is a definite don't glad you can't see it.

  5. Custom painted mailboxes are fun and can add a real touch of creativity to the end of your driveway. Painting your own mailbox is easy as long as you use the correct type of paint and apply the coats evenly so that the color is bold. And as far as what you want to paint on the mailbox, the possibilities are endless.

  6. I love your mail box. It's super fun. I think my husband would love it. For me, I'd probably have painted the gear as well, and added some more for a steam punk look.

  8. I'm serious trying to figure out where I can find a bulldozer gear! I love what you did with it! We rent so I can't do anything to our mailbox, but my parent's mailbox is in need of some major TLC. It is definitely a don't :) Thanks so much for sharing! I found you via Giner Snap Crafts.

  19. If ever theres an indication of how well a home is kept on the inside, its the mailbox on the outside. Kerb appeal.

There are so many homes by us where there is a tatty looking plastic mailbox. Even some of the expensive ones are just fixed onto wonky posts and look awful as a result. A DIY job will always be a head turner, as it shows pride in ones property. <3
