THIS MANTLE WAS MADE
WITH A SHELF I GOT
AT THE THRIFT STORE FOR
$4.99 AND I BELIEVE IT
WAS 25% OFF THAT DAY,
WHICH MADE THINGS EVEN BETTER.
THE PIECE WAS STAINED AND
VARNISHED, AND IT WAS SCRATCHED
UP. IT WASNT THE LOOK OR
THE COLOR I WANTED!
THIS SHELF WAS THE PERFECT
PIECE I HAD IN MIND
WITH A LITTLE PAINT TO
GIVE IT THE WEATHERED LOOK,
SOME STAIN, AND 2 CANDLE
HOLDERS I PURCHASED AT MARSHALLS
WHICH I WOULD USE AS THE
BRACKETS THEY HAD THAT
CORBEL LOOK TO THEM.
HERE IT IS!
THE PIC'S WERE A LITTLE HARD
TO TAKE AS ITS DOWN IN THE
FAMILY ROOM AND I DID'NT HAVE
ALOT OF NATURAL LIGHT TO
WORK WITH.
HOPE YOU LIKE IT
I HAD ALSO REDID THE
MIRROR ON THE MANTLE AND
THE OWL HERE'S
WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE
BEFORE...
THE MIRRORS COLOR WAS
ORIGINALLY A GLOSS WHITE
AND I WANTED IT TO MATCH
THE MANTLE SO I GAVE IT
THE SAME DISTRESSED LOOK
AS I DID THE MANLE.
I LOVE IT AND I CAN'T
WAIT TO DECORATE IT FOR
THE HOLIDAYS.
IM OFF TO LOOK FOR MY
NEXT PROJECT!
Nice job Lauren! I love the corbel candle holder thingys you used under the shelf! Looks fantastic!

Beautiful! The corbels add so much to this vignette.
ReplyDeletelove how the mirror turned out!!
ReplyDeleteit looks perfect with the corbels! and i love the owl, too! :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! Its exactly what I needed to see! I've been looking for something for my front entrance which had to be less than 900mm long and narrower than 300mm. So I've looked at hall tables, bookshelves, sideboards and this is perfect!
ReplyDeleteDo you mind explaining how you mounted it? It looks like such a solid piece of timber is it hung on the wall or just resting on the corbels?
Cheers, Tish D
I tried to write you back but you didn't have an email attached to your commment. so i will answer your question here...
DeleteThank you so much.... It is a wood shelf and what I used was something
They called a French cleat. One metal piece is mounted on the wall and the other is mounted on the shelf, then you lift the mantle up and the cleat slides into the other one on the wall. Pretty easy. I think it was about 14 dollars in home depot. I used one right in the middle that was pretty long. Or you can buy smaller ones. The corbels which are actually candle holders are just mounted under the shelf they are not holding anything up.
Just for the look
Hope this helps you.
Lauren
Cant wait to see yours. I love mine. I have it above a pellet stove and it looks so nice when I have that lit.
Thanks for replying! Yes I know exactly what you mean about the cleats, they will work well on our wall. I've already started looking for the shelf on ebay and gumtree (our craigslist) and I know our local hardware store has some corbels I've already thought "hmm pretty!"
DeleteThanks again for replying, when we do it I will email you a photo!
Tish.

It looks so great I love the bottom parts they have such detail :) I too wanted a mantel / faux mantle so badly.... We have a red brick fireplace in our family room but not one in our formal.... so I too started my search and was attempting to buy one of those electric ones on CL and started to reach for my phone and scrolled down and found a massive one that I just couldn't pass up. Take a look at it on my blog....it's still in the works haven't connected to the wall yet, but it's there.... :)
