GARAGE SALE TIPS! (HOW TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL SALE)

WELCOME TO REVIVAL MONDAY
IT'S BEEN A ROUGH WEEKEND FOR ME, HAD A GARAGE SALE! SO
IM ACTUALLY GOING TO
TALK ABOUT THE GARAGE SALE
IN THIS POST INSTEAD OF REVIAL
MONDAY THIS WEEK
& GIVE SOME TIPS ON WHAT
WORKED FOR ME.

DID VERY WELL BUT IT WAS
ALOT OF WORK!
MY BACK HURT, MY FEET HURT,
MAYBE THAT JUST COMES
WITH AGE....

WELL I LEARNED SOME THINGS
AND ILL PASS ON MY EDUCATION
WITH YOU..

1) I HAD MY GARAGE SALE
ON A SAT. AND A SUNDAY,
BUT I DIDN'T START IT TILL
10:00 AM PEOPLE DIDN'T WANT TO WAIT,
NOTE TO SELF NEXT TIME 9:00AM.

2) I WAS THE BUSIEST IN THE
FIRST HOUR, ALL THOSE
EARLY RISERS!

3.)I PRICED EVERYTHING
.25, .50, AND THEN DOLLAR
AMOUNT'S THAT HELPED WITH THE
MONEY SITUATION. MAKE SURE
YOU HAVE AT LEAST $20 IN
SMALL BILLS AND CHANGE.
I FOUND THE LITTLE PRICE TAG
CIRCLES AT THE DOLLAR STORE.

4.) DID'NT HAVE EVERYTHING PRICED
THE FIRST DAY BUT AS I WENT
ALONG I WAS ABLE TO PRICE EVERYTHING, IT REALLY HELPS

5.) BE SURE TO PRICE EVERYTHING
A LITTLE HIGHER AS EVERYONE
TRIES TO TALK YOU DOWN.

FOR EXAMPLE....

CUSTOMER-EXCUSE ME HOW MUCH

ME- $50.00, IT'S ONLINE FOR
$100

CUSTOMER- WOULD YOU TAKE $30

ME- THINKING IN MY
HEAD- SERIOUSLY?

EVEN LOWER PRICED ITEMS
I WOULD SAY 90 PERCENT OF THE
PEOPLE DIDN'T WANT TO PAY WHAT I
HAD MARKED.

6.)I MADE UP 5 FLORESCENT SIGNS
ALL THE SAME COLOR AND WROTE IN
BIG BLACK LETTERS THE DETAILS OF
THE YARD SALE... STAPLED THEM
TO TELEPHONE POLES, NEAR MAJOR
TRAFFIC AREAS- WORKED GREAT.
THEN I USED LITTLE SIGNS BUT
STAPLED A PIECE OF THE YELLOW
FLORESCENT PAPER TO THEM SO
PEOPLE WOULD KNOW IT WAS THE
SAME SALE, TO MARK THE WAY TO
MY HOUSE.

THE ONLY THING I WOULD HAVE
CHANGED ABOUT THAT IS I WOULD HAVE
USED THE HEAVIER FOAM BOARD
BECAUSE THE NEXT MORNING THE
EDGES OF THE PAPER STARTED
FOLDING OVER.

7.) I MADE SURE ALL MY ITEMS WERE
CLEAN AND EVEN TRIED TO
DRESS UP THE OLD CHINA PIECES
I HAD, TIED TWINE AROUND THE PLATES
AND SET UP THE TEA CUPS
ON A MARBLE TOP TABLE, EVERYTHING
LOOKED NICE!-I THINK IT HELPED.

8.)HAD ALL THE LAMPS I WAS SELLING
PLUGGED INTO THE OUTLET IN THE
GARAGE, AS MY SALE WAS IN THE GARAGE AND ON THE DRIVEWAY. THAT WAY PEOPLE COULD SEE THAT THEY ALL WORKED.

9.)I HAD MY YARDSALE SCHEDULED TILL 4:00PM, NOT MANY PEOPLE THAT
LATE BUT A FEW SHOWED UP AT THAT
TIME AND EVEN WHEN I TOOK MY TIME
CLEANING UP SOMEONE STOPPED AT
5:00 AND BOUGHT $20 WORTH OF STUFF

10)I HAD ALOT OF HAIR TIES AND LITTLE ODDS AND ENDS THAT I WOULD MAKE UP LITTLE SANDWHICH BAGS OF STUFF AND PUT A PRICE ON THEM OF $1.00 or $2.00 THAT WORKED
OUT VERY WELL

11.) HAD A BOX THAT I WOULD MARK
EVERYTHING IN HERE $1.00
OR WHAT EVER YOU HAVE ALOT OF
LITTLE THINGS PRICED AT.

12.) HELPS TO SPREAD THINGS OUT
SO PEOPLE CAN SEE THINGS ON A
CARD TABLE, I EVEN HAD A LONG
BOARD THAT I USED AS A TABLE.

13.) I LABELED ELECTRONICS AND
EVEN PRINTED OUT WHAT THEY WERE AND THE SPECS', STUCK THIS WITH THE ITEM- BIG HELP

14.)I HAD A RACK OF CLOTHING THAT NOTHING
WAS SELLING AND I TOOK
A FEW PIECES HUNG THEM OUT
SEPERATLY AND THEY SOLD.. I GUESS IT'S ALL ABOUT BEING SEEN. AND I ALSO MADE BIGGER PRICE TAG'S FOR THESE WHEN I DID THIS.

15.) OLD POTS AND PANS-DID NOT
SELL
OLD MENS CLOTHING-DID NOT SELL
DRINKING GLASSES- DID NOT SELL

16.) THIS WILL BE MY LAST TIP.
I POSTED AD'S STARTING ON THURS AND THEN EVERYDAY AFTER, ON
CRAIGSLIST, YARDSALESEARCH.COM,
I TOOK ABOUT 12 PICTURES OF EVERYTHING AND POSTED THEM WITH A DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF WHAT I HAD.

I PLAN TO HAVE ANOTHER ONE IN
3 WEEKS HOPEFULLY AS SUCCESSFUL
AS THE FIRST!

HOPE THESE TIPS HELP....

P.S. HAD TO TELL YOU THIS FUNNY STORY. IT WAS ABOUT 8:00 THE FIRST NIGHT OF THE SALE AND MY DOOR BELL RANG. (I live by Rutgers College)
IT WAS 3 COLLEGE BOYS AND THEY
BEGGED ME TO SELL THEM THE VCR THAT I HAD POSTED ON CRAIGSLIST THAT I HAD. THEY APPARENTLY
HAD AN OLDER TV AND HAD TO HAVE AN
OLDER VCR IN ORDER TO HOOK IT UP TO THE TV. THEY TOLD ME I SAVED
THEIR LIVES! PRETTY FUNNY. I GUESS THERE IS A BUYER FOR EVERYTHING!

ANYONE ELSE HAVE A GREAT IDEA!
I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR IT!

OH YEAH ONE MORE TIP,
AT THE END OFF THE SALE I
PUT A CARD TABLE BY THE CURB
WITH A SIGN ON IT FREE AND PUT ITEMS THAT I JUST WANTED TO GET RID OF AND I POSTED A CURB ALERT ON CRAIGSLIST. THE NEXT DAY IT WAS ALL GONE INCLUDING THE TABLE!!!
NOTE TO SELF- DON'T USE A CARDTABLE....

  1. Thanks for sharing, Lauren! I like the idea of 'showcasing' some clothing instead of having all items just hanging on a rack.

  2. I agree that garage sale helps you get rid of unnecessary stuff and lets other people benefit from cheap items in a reasonable condition. You have given great tips how to present the items better to the buyer.
